Not so much 'home automation' this time as automotive tech, but useful all the same. We recently went on a weeks holiday and with the plethora of electronics that often need charged in the car we looked round for a solution. While the Plex dev team works hard on the v9 release, they've just managed to integrate the Apple Video Decode Acceleration Framework Reference into v8. At last the GPU is being employed to decode those lovely 720P and 1080P H.264 videos (kudos Ryan). Philips have launched their smart home lighting brand, Dynalite, in the United States. The range includes trailing edge dimmers, relays, ballast (1-10V, DSI, DALI), and multipurpose controllers with multipurpose sensors for presence detection and daylight harvesting, user control panels and touch screens, plus network gateways, bridges and other modules that permit integration of third-party systems such as HVAC, security, AV, blinds and building management systems. The Gadget Show's Jason Bradbury recently attended the Microsoft hosted preview of Project Natal - the next gen gaming interface for the XBox. Watching Jason's first impressions, especially the section on walking into your lounge, being recognised and using voice control, definitely have us thinking of the Home Automation possibilities around the technology.
So after xbmc will the next reason to hack your XBox be to control your entire home? Will Natal live up to the hype, or will it just be another cute gaming interface building on what the Wii started. Let us know what you think in the comments below...
