Kiss & Mplayer have tiff

Slashdot is reporting that Kiss & the developers of the open source MPlayer have fallen out over code that both parties acuse the other of tea-leafing.

MPlayer started the spat by accusing Kiss of using GPL'd code in their DP-508 DVD player, lists of subtitle formats, including MPlayer's own MPsub, appear in the DP-508 firmware.

Kiss MD Peter Wilmar Christensen then countered by accusing MPlayer of stealing THEIR code, a translation on the MPlayer website quotes him as saying "There are a lot of things that could have happened, one could imagine that code from our community has spread to other communities included the Open Source and code originating from our player could accordingly be a part of MPlayer, if in fact there are any similarities"

Garage Door DMCA Case Dismissed

The Register is reporting that a case brought by the Chamberlain Group against a manufacturer of a replacement remote for their garage door opener has been thrown out of court. They claimed that Skylink Technologies Inc breached the anti circumvention provisions of the DCMA in creating their Model 39 remote control.

Luckily the judge saw sense and ruled that the DMCA couldn't be used in an anti-competative fashion like this.
