New Wifi Gear - 12 Mile Range

"New wireless networking gear lets users log on to their service provider from 12 miles away. But the service may mean bad news for 3G, and it is here today Communications equipment maker Proxim became the latest company to sell high-powered Wi-Fi networks that travel long distances, essentially providing buyers with an "ISP in a box", the company's chief executive, Jonathan Zakin, said last week.

These versions of wireless networks using the Wi-Fi, or 802.11b, standard create a wireless zone of up to 12 miles long, far beyond the usual 300-foot-radius range that Wi-Fi typically achieves, Zakin said.

Overkill for use inside a home, where most Wi-Fi networks are currently found, the long-range Wi-Fi gear from Proxim and others is meant for small Web service providers. It lets them beam long-range signals outside, particularly to sell broadband access in rural areas where DSL (digital subscriber lines) or cable broadband service haven't reached, Zakin said."...

Philips and Sony Produce Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Rival

"Philips and Sony announced on Thursday that they plan to work together on new wireless technology that will allow consumer devices to talk to each other. The consumer-electronics giants have agreed to jointly create a radio frequency technology, called Near Field Communication (NFC), as well as jointly manufacture consumer devices that will use it. NFC will allow data to be transferred over a wireless spectrum at 13.56MHz. Devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras, handhelds or personal computers will be able to talk within a range of 20 centimetres and at speeds of up to 212kbps."...

Microsoft Wants to Network Your Home

Microsoft is looking to uncork a bottleneck for its software and services inthe home by selling networking products, starting this autumn, company representatives said.

The software giant has a team developing 802.11b wireless home networking products within the same hardware division that creates keyboards and mice. Company representatives declined to comment on the details of the future products, but said that entering the home networking market was in line with the software giant's interests…

Network camera maker IQinVision has unveiled a new wireless video camera that comes with Wi-Fi , or 802.11b, capability built in.  For the Home?
