Video: Nest Learning Thermostat Now Available in the UK

Nest have finally announced a UK version of their learning thermostat.  Now available from Amazon for the DIY installers, the system comes with a 12volt wired or wireless boiler relay to suit UK installations.  A certified installer program is already in operation (check out the link below) with a ‘basic install’ ranging from £75 to £99.

The Learning Thermostat remembers the temperatures you like, creates a custom schedule for your home, and turns itself down when you’re away. It can be wall mounted or sit on a table top with the optional stand.

You can control it from anywhere with your phone, tablet or laptop to adjust you’re home temperatures while you are on the move.  With the Auto Away feature, the Nest Thermostat senses you’ve left home and automatically adjusts the temperature to avoid heating an empty house.

…this Nest Thermostat is an almost entirely new Nest Thermostat. The one we have in the US and Canada won’t work for the UK because there’s a different problem to solve. The issue isn’t that you leave the heat or AC on all day. It’s that you barely have any control over your heat. Or your bill.

Most UK heating systems don’t even have thermostats. So the actual temperature or your comfort never enters into the equation. In order to warm up the house, you have to keep walking back and forth to the programmer, manually turning on the heat in quick bursts hoping you get it right. There’s also no way to track how much heat you’re using, so balancing comfort and energy savings is guesswork.

One other big difference between the Nest Learning Thermostat for the US and the UK is installation. Boilers in the UK use high-voltage wires, so we strongly encourage professional installation, and we have already built up a network of trained Nest Certified Professionals to help. https://certified.nest.com/uk/

Installing your Nest Thermostat will take hour or so. The installer will connect the Nest Thermostat to your Wi-Fi network, make sure it’s also connected to your Heat Link and add your programmer’s schedule. Once it’s up and running, we think it will completely change the way you heat your home.

  1. Finally! Been such a long time coming that I have now left the country….. This does seem like a brilliant product and a shame I am unable to test it however I’d be inclined to go for the Honeywell model the other week you reviewed due to its multiple zone control. Do realise it’s an apples for oranges comparison.

Wonder how this is going to get on the uk market vs the like of Tado and British Gas’s own version.

    Thanks for this update,

Where are they getting their information from? The UK isn’t living in the middle ages when it comes to heating!

I’ve waited SO long for this product but this new NEST has left me feeling disappointed. The USA video showed how easy the installation of their version was. Just unscrew the old and screw on the new NEST, easy. Now the UK version requires a Nest Certified Professional to install. Plus the extra ‘Heat Link’ hardware! I wanted to buy this, install myself and easily remove should I move property. Looks like this thermostat stays with the house.

I’m now going to put my order in for the Heatmiser Neo wish I had done this when there was %15 off rather than hold out for the NEST.

  3. Suspect lack of separate control for hot water will be a deal breaker for some (though I live with no separate control in our house at the moment)

  4. Purchased from Amazon on the day of release and installed myself. Initial impressions are good, nice simple interface and iPhone app. One nice feature is the screen lights up when you walk past, so you can check the temp without having to touch the unit. Whether it saves money or not is yet to be seen!

  5. Having a 7 day programmable thermostat with multiple set points (woo we have these in the technological backwater that is the UK although nest seems to think not) I can’t really justify the purchase of this except that it looks nice. Their version of zoned control seems to be buy more thermostats to control an already zoned system. If this had came out at the same time as the US release I would probably have gone for it but I’m holding off to see what happens with lightwave, evohome et al.

  6. Yes, yes, go ahead, give up your last privacy – in your home.
