Personally I would try redeploying an old PC rather than trying to run SC 7.X on a NAS box - it does run on ReadyNAS, but it will be easier to configure, run and upadate if you use an old PC with Windows XP on it. It doesn't have a huge memory footprint, and it doesn't need much in terms of CPU power. If you want to use the same computer for ripping and encoding, and want to encode to multiple formats then a dual or quad core is preferable.

7.3 is very close to release now. It brings lots of new features (including using the remote as a player), plus a more efficient streaming engine. I've been beta testing it for 4 monthsand now that AlienBBC is available for 7.3 it's good enough for mainstream use. My initial concerns about changing the sort order when listing by albums were fixed about 4 weeks after the original review was published.

They've introduced a Squeezebox Boom - described on the home page at www.slimdevices.com. A friend of mine has one and says it isn't going to replace a mainstream HiFi (he has Meridian 800 series kit) but it is perfectly suited to a kitchen or bedroom player. It won second place in the "Gadget Show Top 5" when tested purely as an internet radio.

I bought a Squeezebox Duet and added a couple of receivers, giving me three zones. I set up Squeezecentre running on a media pc. So far I am blown away by the quality, intuitive interface and the unexpected extras. Combined with the Alien plug in for BBC radio it gives me everything I need... my only complaint would be some of the Internet radio stations loosing connection .. but that is nothing to do with the Squeezebox. The only thing I would have looked for would be additional programmable buttons on controller so I can quickly select zones, or synchronise them. I was hours away from buying a Sonos - but I am now pleased I choose the Squeezebox.

I believe it will work on certain NAS's that can run the required SlimServer software. Have a look at - http://forums.slimdevices.com/
