All quiet on the western front

After a promising start, it gone very quite here lately.

Mark, you need to do some more advertising on the mailing lists!

Talking about ukha_d, I had to un-subscribe to it as with normal email, spam & mailing lists etc, I was getting in excess of 200 emails a day.

Is it possible to subscribe and view posts via http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ukha_d/ but without getting sent any emails?

    Yep, you can do that...

I read the list that way.

    Cheers

We're starting from zero here. I don't think it's "gone quiet". We need to build a user base and let it grow.

These Forums are not designed to replace the mailing list, but rather compliment it, for the reasons you point out some people prefer this format.

Yes..change your subscription to "NO EMAILS" and you can still read thru the web interface.

      Thanks

It's seriously difficult to get a new web site going. The web is a huge mass of white noise, and to get any signal up above that is very hard. Even very popular sites can go down and never recover. And automation is just such a dead topic (and I say that as someone who has an automation product.) You'd think that with the high percentage of gear-hears on the web that it would get more attention, but there's just a real dirth of discussion on it.

Perhaps it's because it's been the domain of high dollar custom installed systems and non one thinks that they can do it themselves. I dunno. But it's hard to get any real discussion going. The other automation related web sites I know are slow to dead stop, and the NGs are slow also.

Perhaps we need to put out a rumor that Al Queda is going to use home automation technology to bring us down or something.

              Dean - I wouldn't get too depressed!

The mailing list has great support, and this website is getting more hits than ever before in it's 7 year history.

The mailing list gets an average of 2000 mails a month, and has done for well over 12 months, I'd hardly call that "slow to dead stop".

The UK HA community is one of the strongest I know, it has people like Frank, Keith, Ian (among many, many others) who design and make their own projects. My house has all it's automation done by me, there's nothing here I havn't installed myself, and most of the regulars on the list are in the same boat.

One thing that isn't hard on the UKHA list is getting a discussion going, in fact it's often quite the opposite :-)

The mailing list is definatly where it's at, the web site gets a lot of hits, and I have no doubt the forums will get used, but I think it will take a good few years, if ever, for the forums to even approach the amount of discussion that goes on on the mailing list, and they wont replace it while I've still got a hole in my arse.

The fact that I can type these remarks that don't agree with yours, fairly confident that I'm not going to get flamed to a crisp just shows what a great community we have, everyone entitled to their own opinion, and with everyone respecting that.
