    Default Door Entry

'wondered if anyone knew of an app (iPhone) that can be used to send a message to Cortex just by tapping its icon ...

message to be varied from time to time, and perhaps the possibility of a choice of three messages ...

for releasing locks on front door & opening garage doors ...

    ???

There are GSM gate openers. These have a couple of relays and you just dial the GSM box let it ring a couple of times and it opens the gate. You can set up via text messages allowed numbers etc.
Have a look at these links

    And a homebrew version

Uses google voice, may be able to use Skype or VoipBuster.
IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU'VE GOT AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

    interesting, thanks ...

tempting, and some useful insights, too ...

in our case, though, we'd need three ...

and we already have the house end of the set-up, we're just short of the 'phone end ...

ie: Cortex makes a pretty good job of interfacing with the locks & openers, allowing all sorts of interlocks & checks, and it can deal with e-mails & SMS & even Skype, to a degree - e-mail would be preferred, to avoid the costs of having to have more SIM cards - but ... the UI would be far too long-winded to be useful for everyday opening of doors ...

'tis one of life's mysteries, that Idratek have nothing to offer in the App world of iOS & others ... so far, at least ...

not easy, of course, to do well - there are some quite elaborate Apps available for (eg) iPhone, that provide Remote Control functionality, but none seems to go quite far enough or to offer a suitably direct & intuitive interface ...

If the latter then this will work for you via xAP into Cortex :-)

The HTML5 solution looks great - and if of course a great cross platform solution - it's about time we had some HA control appearing using this... It may also be a better solution outside of your LAN as xAP normally uses broadcast UDP which of course doesn't route over the Internet. You can work around this using an app called 'iServer' running at home which is a way of transporting xAP over TCP / Internet.

not sure - one touch approach could be good, two could be OK, time to respond also a factor, as also range of operation ...

scenario is probably characterised by mother arriving home with demanding baby on one arm & 'phone in pocket or handbag ...

and wanting to get indoors via one of three different doors ...

with alternatives of a bunch of traditional keys and something like wall-mounted keyboards ...

so while it needs to be simple & quick, the competition won't put up much of a fight !

and Cortex could probably up the ante by making it functionally quite smart, too - eg: context-sensitive timings & joining-up with other things ...

Nice, I hope it is easily ported so that those not on the Apple bandwagon could also get hold of it.
