    BDR91 reoccurring fault

    Evening all!
First post, and i have a problem!
Installed everything myself, two BDR91 for hot water and heating, 4 smart TRV's, wifi controller and hotwater tank sensor.
All running ok until approx 1.30am each night when i get a "comms fault, heating valve actuator"
Contacted Honeywell and the said it was because the wifi needed updating! the said they would push an update, nothing has been updated and the fault is now happening more often!
    Would appreciate any views!

Hi. Did they ask you check whether the BDRs are separated by a minimum distance of 300mm from metal objects etc? I wasn't aware that there was a wifi update for the controller to BDRs. As I sure you know, this is not the same as the wifi connection to your router.

Hi HenGus, Thank you for your quick reply! No they didn't ask, they are approx double that distance though and far away from tank, pump and valve. They are located on the outside of the hot water tank cupboard at about a metre higher than the tank. The fault only happens with the heating BDR and not the hotwater and generally late at night. Going to see what happens tonight!

When I had Evohome installed nearly 3 years ago, I had 6 months of comms faults initially on the HW actuator and then on both the Heating and HW actuators. They can be annoyingly difficult to solve. After moving the BDRs around the airing cupboard to avoid everything and anything electrical or metal, and metal in the line of site between the controller and BDRs, the BDRs were changed, and finally the controller.

Just a thought. Do you have a smart meter? If the fault is occurring at the same time each night, it could be interference from another wifi source.

I initially installed them inside the airing cupboard but had a nightmare with comms faults so relocated them outside near the ceiling, all good then this started! I have the controller in the bedroom about eight feet away with only a plasterboard wall in between, no smart meter, Honeywell have advised me to go find a Connected Specialist after only two emails! hey ho! thanks once again for your help!

My advice, FWiW, is keep photos of the fault logs. I wouldn't call in a specialist until you have evidence of a string of faults. You could end up paying someone quite a bit of money for a NO FAULT FOUND. I suspect that you know this already. Are you able to change the BDR?

Photos of all fault logs taken as you recommended, i've swapped the HW BDR and the heating BDR, my guess is that if the fault now switches to the HW valve i have a duff BDR, other than that it's a controller fault.
As a side note that with the few emails i've had with honeywell they said that the wifi software wasn't the latest firmware and to disconnect and reconnect the wifi to get it to update.....the firmware is 01.00.02.00.....was like that when i bought it and still is, my understanding that this IS the latest firmware, naughty Honeywell!

If you swapped the BDR91's over I hope you cleared the existing bindings on them before rebinding them to their new functions ? If not you'll create more problems than you solve as you'll end up double binding both relays.

Welcome to the Honeywell World. These types of faults can be really annoying. As I approach the age of 3 score years and 10, it makes me worry slightly about leaving my technically-illerate wife with a potential problem should I not be around. That said, were it not for the fault log, I suspect that I would have never known that there were comms issues.
