This year felt like the one I joined my kids and watched more ‘TV’ on YouTube than any other platform.
So here, in no particular order, are some of the channels that I’ve enjoyed most over the last 12 months.
Techtainment
iPhonedo
Check out iPhonedo for great tech reviews with a unique sense of humour that provides useful real world information in an entertaining way.
Techmoan
The Techmoan channel started life mainly with dash cam reviews but has morphed into an incredibly engaging series on tech and vintage Hi Fi.
Jason Bradbury
If you watched the Gadget Show back in the good old days then you’ll know Jason Bradbury. His channel has lit up this year as he sold his house and has set off to take his family on a World Trip filled with fun, entertainment, education and tech.
The Verge
For me The Verge is the best tech news site around and their videos are excellent. Always the first place I go to for a video review of the latest gear.
Marques Brownlee
Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) produces some slick tech review videos on smart phones and other tech.
TWiT
Leo Laporte’s This Week in Tech (TWiT) channel covers all their major shows plus chops up the longer ones into more accessible bite size pieces too.
SpaceX
One of uncle Elon’s companies that I follow closely. Watching live streams of those stage one landings never gets old. Once subscribed you can set YouTube reminders to notify you when the live launch broadcasts start.
Smarter Every Day
Destin Sandlin’s enthusiasm for turning science into fun is infectious. Lots of super slow mo’s and amazing discoveries.
Cars
Fully Charged Show
Bit of a cross-over this one. Robert Llewellyn of Scrapheap Challenge fame has become the poster boy for EVs and Renewable Energy in the UK and further afield. The channel has grown a lot this year and now features Jonny Smith (5th Gear) as a co-host.
Jay Leno’s Garage
Talk Show host Jay Leno covers his famous car collection as well as visitors to his garage with their motors. My favourite episodes are the regular ‘Restoration Blog’ videos that document the on-going projects to bring classic and vintage vehicles back to life.
Roborace
Short videos following the development of the Roborace car, being created for a motorsport series where the cars drive themselves using AI, rather than relying on a fleshy carbon life form.
Photography
Kai W
Kai Man Wong left DigitalRev TV a while back and started up on his own. While most of his videos masquerade as comedy, they do reveal an interesting conclusion.
Lok Cheung
Lok Cheung, Kai’s sidekick from DigitalRev TV, also made the break in 2017 and his calmer approach can be equally informative.
Mike Browne
Mike Browne’s videos are welcomed break from the tech. Concentrating on things like composition rather than gear, I’ve found his channel to be one of the most helpful to my photo game.
