This years WWDC keynote from the San Jose Convention Centre is just wrapping up.

Tim is no Steve when it comes to presentations so thank goodness for Craig Federighi. There were some interesting announcements though, here are some of the highlights in our usual cheat sheet…

HomeKit

  • HomeKit Secure Video – private processing & encrypted storage
  • 10 days of recording included in iCloud account
  • HomeKit coming to Routers – from eero, Linksys & ISPs

iOS

  • Also coming in iOS 13…
  • Faster all round
  • App downloads 50-60% smaller
  • Dark Mode
  • Swipe typing
  • Mail, Safari & Notes all updated
  • Reminders app – new from ground up
  • New Maps (USA by end of 2019)
  • New Maps ‘look around’ (Street View)
  • Privacy focus – More protections around Location
  • Stopping rogue apps checking WiFi / BT for your location
  • ‘Sign in with Apple’ to 3rd party apps without revealing personal details
  • Per app random email address you can dump at any time
  • Improvements to portrait lighting
  • New controls to edit video (rotate, filters etc)
  • New ‘Days’ & ‘Years’ views in Photos app
  • Uses machine learning to choose best pics and filter out the rest

  • Neural TTS for more natural speech
  • CarPlay – new redesigned CarPlay screens
  • Siri now works with 3rd party CarPlay apps like Waze
  • Send unknown callers directly to voice mail
