Elon Musk took to the stage in the early hours of this morning, UK time, to reveal a new Tesla Powerwall 2 with 14kWh of storage and a peak output of 7kW for $5,500. Musk also announced the commercial product Powerpack 2 with 210kWh storage with a peak output of 50kW.
To transition to an all-electric energy economy he foresees a requirement of three times the generation levels of today. Musk’s vision of the future is an electric car, Powerwall and solar generation for each household.
To reach that goal a new range of various colours and styles of Solar Roof tiles were announced and and while there was no pricing for them Musk said…
We want the solar roof to look better, last longer, provider better insulation and cost less, all things considered.

Really interested to see the pricing in the UK for the overall cost, for instance I have just used their calculator and for a 3 bedroom house to be fully dependant on the power wall, it states you need 2 powerwall’s. The pricing for the tiles is still not available, he mentioned that he wants it to be the same or cheaper than conventional tiles, but I don’t see how that will be. Looks like an investment of at least £11,800 including fitting without tiles, that’s still a substantial amount of money. If my bills are around £100 per month, and say the overall investment is £17,800 (£6,000 for tiles and fitting) it would take around 15 years to pay off, which is a rather long time.
