The New Sonos CR200 Controller

Sonos CR200 Controller

We’ve just seen this first image of the new Sonos controller.  The CR200 uses a touch screen and comes complete with a charging cradle.  There’s no word on pricing but it should be available pretty much immediately.

We’re also told that Sonos will be releasing a new bundle. The BU150 now changes to the BU250 which includes the CR200. There also is a slight colour change with the zoneplayers hardware to match the new controller but there are no technical changes & will still be named the ZP120 & ZP90.

Can I be the first to say “Strewth, that looks ugly”

I’m going to be writing about Sonos and its place in the commercial install market soon. We’ve had reasonable notice of a touch screen CR100 replacement for a few months now and having seen this I’m very keen for the details to be released.

Initial thought – yes, but I’ve got an iPhone / iPod touch…

Searching the Sonos website for CR200 brings up a page for the CR200 datasheet – but no content as it’s not been published yet. Must be nearly ready to go.

It’s going to be interesting to see what it offers (if anything) over the iPhone interfce

  5. In a nutshell the new controller will have a higher resolution screen (640 x 480) be quicker in operation, has separate volume control buttons (rather than being embedded within the app on the iPhone), the CR200 will obviously have a superior battery life (charging cradle is now included) UK price will be £279.

    resolution’s pretty irrelevant
Volume buttons are a big plus – the iPhone app is not good in that regard.
Battery life may or may not be a significant factor
launches tomorrow – dealers are still embargoed from releasing more details

Well I’ve seen it running now and I have to say it’s pretty quick. the search is excellent and having hard vol buttons does make a difference. The Sonos iPhone app 3.0 hasn’t shipped out today which is a shame

  8. Sadly it provides little reason for existing owners to upgrade at this price… perhaps if it showed my photo library as well – surely not too hard? Sonos is a great audio system, perhaps they should extend their skills to other media.

My Wife would love to be able to show the occasional photo (albeit low res) to a friend without a PC – this is an opportunity missed for existing owners. In short, modernising the controller – well done, functional innovation – must try harder.
