If it's gravity hot water it won't be pumping over on hot water only,

Is the water coming out of the expansion pipe hot?

If so your boiler stat has gone.

hi ya.yes hot water only thats what i thought strange. when i went to customers home to check to find boiler boxed in in cupboard with little access. i managed to check pump working ok. turned of heating selected water only then found water to be gravity fed. by the time i got to loft it was pumping over red hot and banging it head off. so had to turnoff.now removed all the boxing in that kitchen fitter had done, so it can get some air. she has messaged me tonight saying it hasn't been banging, but il have to check myself to see if its pumping over.
sunbeam .would you still say faulty stat

    kitchen fitters eh

I would say faulty stat, just make sure first that the stat end is in the boiler pocket, sometimes when you push the stat end into the boiler it comes out the other side.
