x10 & VMWare + Advice on buy HW

Having never used any X10 kit before, I'm considering pulling together a basic CM12 & a couple appliance modules as a proof of concept.

Having used VMWare ESX (2.5x & 3) I plan to create either a virtual PC or server to run HomeSeer which will connect to the CM12 via the serial port. Has anyone tried this configuration before, should it work?

Also can anyone advise on the best place to buy the above three items, ideally very cheap, if possible I'd like to collect if local to Bedfordshire.

    Many Thanks

    LO,

I have been running homeseer on a server for just under a year now and it works fine. Although by system runs from the USB, but that shouldn't make any difference.
I purchase my X10 stuff from http://www.letsautomate.com/ never had any problems with them and they seem one of, if not the cheapest. Use them via mail order, they are based in Langley, Berks.
But I think they have run out of X10-2 lamp modules until December, which is a pain.
There is some x10 stuff on ebay but it sells for silly money compared to letsautomate. For the life of me I just don't understand why people pay over the top prices on ebay, when you can get it cheaper at a specialist retailer

    Cheers

    Darren.

A couple of other specialist automation retailers for your list:

(not sure of their policies re: collecting in person though)

I had a work PC once with XP Pro, and a Win2k WMware session. While the VM-bit worked fine, I had trouble connecting out via the serial & USB ports from within the VMware session. As I didn't really *need* to connect I never bothered to fix it, although I'm sure it was fix-able.

Also as Darren mentions there is a USB version of the CM12 now, if you don't want to tie-up a serial port.

Your not the only one to have problems getting a serial link working via a VM-ware session. It is possible as one of the guys I used to work with managed to do it for some software we had. I will contact him to see if he can remember how he did it. I know he spent a couple of days on it.

Another shop that is very good is www.intellihome.be . You can't collect obviously, but if you spend 149 euros or more (about 102 pounds) shipping is free. Shipping if you are unluckly takes 4 working days. And if you order normally before 11am you will, 90% of the time, get it the next day. Unless you live in the middle of no-where, then it might take a little longer.
IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU'VE GOT AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.
