    freezer failier and lights ect

I have been thinking about installing a automation system, let me set the scene I have a small shop on the outer Hebrides, we have 3 freezers and 2 large chillers and as a butchers a large walk in meat locker. we still have power cuts and the obvious mechanical failing's and over the years chillers failed over the weekend wasting all the food and meats. not easy to get replacements on the islands. After installing a simple timer on the coffee machine to get around remembering to put it on in the mornings I remembered something some web pages I had read on x10 ect a few years ago. so here is my real question.

Would I be able to wire up a automated system to switch on lights, chiller and freezer lights, display lights say about 10 min,s before we dragged our selves downstairs in the mornings and more to the point could I set this system up to monitor the chillers/freezers et during the nights and warn me of a frailer or even more advance switch on my generator.

Its only a small family run shop and I would do all thie work myself. I have already installed a network in the house and shop, plus a server in the loft so if its not to hard ,I should be able to manage it with advice.

    Any suggestions please.

I take it you may have a pc running 24/7 ...?? If so you could use something like xPL (FREE HA Software ) to run scheduled events to send out x10 commands to control your lights.......you would obviously need some x10 devices connected to your lights.......

Then if you install a TOM10 TEMP Board and connected some dallas temp sensors to it you could monitor the temp at each location required and have xPL alert you that one or more are outside a certain range....
The TOM10 TEMP Board can have up to 10 sensors and connects to the computers serial port....

Another solution would be to use a RFXCOM Receiver and some RFXCOM Temp sensors...this is a more expensive solution as its RF based but it will soon have an xPL Plugin availabe

Thanks for that info Frank I will start my web search there, I would be nice to be able to monitor and control the shop from the flat. And yes I have a 3 PC,s running 24/7 my home server, the back office pc for the shop and the shop till, which is and epos system running win 98.

        Hi

The base place to get started with xPL is to have a look at Mal,s site

This can be your guide of C++ and here we discuss its various uses, like applications, animation, web browsers, casino games, media access, and many other uses.

I cant seem to locate Justins site anymore , hes the guy in the UK who builds the TOM10 temp sensor board....If interested in persuing this then contact me directly and i will pass on his email address (i think his board is approx 60 quid plus sensors) ,otherwise if you decide on the RFXCOM sensors have a chat to Mal as hes currently finishing of the RFXCOM Plugin.......

        Good Luck
