    I did think about a beam grid system once,may have mentioned it on here somewhere else. So you get kind of a grid reference of where you are in a room. You could put a PIR in each corner of the room and depending on which order they are triggered in will give you some idea of where abouts in the room someone is.
    RFid tags can still be useful. But not that easy to set up. Unless you are rewiring the house. Plus you need to carry the tag with you.
    Like many things I think its a combination of things that will work best. And some rooms may require a different approach compared to other rooms in a house for presence detection.

    continuing the diversity theme, 'thought seat sensors would be easy to find, but these were all some Googling brought to light :

    another option might be temperature sensors, 'though lags might then be a problem ...
