It's not really 'wasted', the faceplate is magnetic so iPad can probably be removed quite easily, but I don't like the idea anyway. I checked their website and I like the in wall dock for iPhone much better: http://www.iportmusic.com/products/in-wall
I think it's worth approaching this from I slightly different angle, In principle it can look as a waste of an iPad, but it's worth considering what with the release of app's across the home automation range and the general cost of in-wall panels anyway, it provides an ideal 1 dock solution to controlling all kinds of aspects of the house, so say instaed of spending up to £1K on a nice looking wall panel, which would be limited to controlling the system it's attached to, suddenly an in-wall dock turnes an ipad in to a complete house control
From some of the new and exciting product release coming up I think you will start to see a lot the manufacturers adopting this as a possible ideal single controller

8 months old daughter and I'm trying to get her to play with the iPad but she's not that much interested yet, she prefers some dumb talking-singing baby machine with big real buttons ;]
I see your point, but still for this particular problem an in-wall mount is a proper overkill IMHO.
