    Wiring Help Needed

I recently installed the Loft Box system (all running perfect) to five MSWP's (2 ct100 cables and 2 cat5e to all 5) around the house.

I have now had a BT Master line installed at node zero and want to have a network functionality and telephone points at each location. I'm getting confused as which way to go.

Do I use one of the cat5e cables for a telephone extension (in the MSWP) ?

Any info/help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

Yes, thats the normal way to do it. You use a CAT5, patched from your panel into the phone line. You can common up a few sockets on your patch panel to share the phone line...

You then need a RJ45 - BT adaptor everywhere you are pluggin in a phone...

      Thanks for the reply.

This may be a very daft question (but I will ask it anyway)

If I connect the cat5e to my adsl router/hub at node 0 (which is connected to the phone line) will this provide the same results, or do I have to go the patch panel route (which looks really complex).

No, you need to keep your phone sockets away from your data hub/switch/router. If you dont have a patch panel you could common the cables up using something else, like a block connector.

However, one of the ideas of structured cabling is that it makes it easy to convert a phone point to a data point etc quickly and easily by re-patching.

Could you point me in the right direction for a low cost patch panel and possibly a wiring diagram.

          Many thanks for your help.

Quick look on eBay turns up this...

On the wiring side, you just need to common up all the connections, so say you need 4 extentions, take the last 5 sockets on the patch panel (1 is your input for the phone line) and connect blue to blue to blue.... etc etc.

You'll need to make up a lead with a BT plug on one end and an RJ45 on the other to input the phone line onto the panel.

                  Hi David,

The colour code for T586B Structured Cabling is as follows

                  MAIN_COLOUR/Stripe_Colour

                  1 WHITE/Orange
                  2 ORANGE/Whilte
                  3 WHITE/Green
                  4 BLUE/White
                  5 WHITE/Blue
                  6 GREEN/White
                  7 WHITE/Brown
                  8 BROWN/White

Standard BT Wiring colours for Phone Sockets are

                  1 {GREEN/White - hardly ever connected }
                  2 BLUE/White B Wire
                  3 ORANGE/White Bell Wire
4 WHITE/Orange Earth (rarely used in domestic installations)
                  5 WHITE/Blue A Wire
                  6 {WHITE/Green- hardly ever connected }

By a happy coincidence the colours match with the internal wiring of RJ45-BT Adapters so the simple way to connect everything up it to pick a bank of spare sockets as in...

...which become the appearance of your phone line for patching to other rooms in the house.

Remove the customer part of the faceplate on your master socket. Different types have different numbers of terminals available but they will be numbered 1-6 or if you have an ADSL faceplate you will probably only have 2,3,5.

Using a length of CAT5 cable connect to the faceplate as follows

                  2 BLUE/White
                  3 ORANGE/White
                  5 WHITE/Blue

If you have terminals available for 1,4 6 then you can also connect...

                  1 GREEN/White
                  4 WHITE/Orange
                  6 WHITE/Green

                  ... but is isnt required

At the patch panel end punch down the matching colours to your commoned sockets as per the T586B colour code and everything should work just fine.

From then on, puting a phone anywhere is a simple matter of running a patch cord from one of your bank of "PhoneLine" sockets to the required room and plugging in an RJ45-BT adapter.

                  Regards

                  Keith

Thanks for all the help, I have managed to get the telephones working as per your instructions.

Just need to mount the patch panel into a home-made enclosure and I'm done.

                      Thanks Again.

I think I posted this on a another part of the forum by mistake - Can somebody please help.

Which colours go with which ?

Telecom lead coming in to the house has 4 wires:
                          Black,Green,Orange & White

Coming out from one of the boxes their are six wires :
                          Orange / White
                          White / Orange
                          Blue / White
                          White / Blue
                          Green /White
                          White / Green.

Which colours do the 4 wires connect to. Please can somebody help.???

That is the main incoming BT cable and should be terminated on the rear of an NTE5 which only BT should touch.

The incoming line *SHOULD* be on Orange and White.

The Orange and White of the incoming cable should be connected to the BLUE/White and WHITE/Blue which are the A & B wires but they should not be directly connected to them.

The premises wiring should be connected to the punchdown teminals on the removable part of the faceplate as per my earlier posting above

As I said above, the incoming cable should only be worked on by BT and should be terminated on the screw terminals on the rear of an NTE5.

** References to BT also include other Telecom Network Providers **

Customer owned wiring should be connected to the removable front of the NTE5

                            Hope that helps

IMHO there's actually a much simpler way of running the Cat5 behind the ports on the patch panel.

Strip a long section of outer sheath (2 or 3 foot). It will need to be stripped in smaller sections (eg 9 ins) as a long length won't pull straight off.

Starting at the sheath end snake the pairs between the punch-downs in 1 continous length. Snip off any extra after the last port.

This is the only way to do it with some patch panels as the punch-down connectors can get in a grump about having 2 wires inserted.

Also, the RJ45 to BT adaptors can be wired slightly differently inside depending on manufacturer. The A and B lines to the phone can be swapped between the corresponding RJ45 jack pins causing the run to cross-over which results in no ring, though the phone is still useable.
