Why use Solid State Relays (SSRs) instead of coil relays?

The subject line says it all really - why use SSRs?

Some of the application examples on www.o2m8.com use SSRs and I wondered if there was a technical reason.

My first guess was that they have a lower current draw than coil relays, although low-power coil relays are possible. What else? smaller size, perhaps no audible "click" when switching?

Research so far shows that SSRs and coils are about the same price.

    Thanks,

    Tim.

    Hi Tim
Probably opto isolated as well and i * think* you can get ssr,s which switch at the zero crossing and this reduces interference ?? also Faster ??

      Thanks Frank.

I think that for my application (driving solenoid valves for garden irrigation) I don't think it matters which I choose. I'll let you know how I get on though.

      Cheers,

      Tim.

        Advantages of solid state relays:
        Nothing to wear out
high inrush capability (for use with solenoids, inductive loads, etc)
low control input requirements (easy system compatibility)
Built in surge survival (such as Maximum Surge Survival)

Thanks Mike. I'm intending to use these relays (whichever sort) to sit between my Web Brick and some solenoid valves for garden irrigation, so SSRs may well be a good bet.

          Cheers,

          Tim.
