I'm in the market for a new washer/dryer so thought I'd do some searching to see how things are progressing wrt automation and came across this...

It's a nice example of how things are progressing but it's a little frustrating waiting for the mass market to catch up. The closest thing to a mass market product I've come across is from Samsung (http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/h...o-bubble-vrttm). It's another closed system however with no public API. Close but not quite there yet.
