    They're a bit pricey Keith.

    Isn't this a more cost-effective solution?:

The kat5 units offer considerably more functionality, you are not comparing like for like.

In addition to the the fact that kat5 units are powered giving better quality, they also include full scart replication at the receiver end, meaning widescreen switching is intact.

IR relay also means you can use your remote controls.

Not to mention you can do multidrop... etc, etc...

    Cheers

    Eddie,

SCART replication may be necessary for some, but not for all.

IR relay can be very cheaply achieved using devices bought on the high street or even an existing TV-link setup.

A superb picture can be achieved using self-made cables without any of these boxes if the distances are short, which in the home environment they are likely to be.

I only considered this option after seeing the huge price increase of the Mk2 units over the Mk1's. I'm now VERY glad I didn't spend hundreds of pounds without a little experimentation of my own.

The Mark2 units aren't a "huge" increase in price. 170 a pair (which now includes ir receiver and stick on emitter plus 2 PSUs) is basically the same price as the Mk1 units with the IR upgrade. The rest of the difference in price is made up of VAT which now has to be charged. So the new Scart control, switchable termination etc are all features that cost very little more.

As Eddie pointed out, you need to compare KAT5 with a product of similar features. Have a look at the Keene units for example. Almost 100 more a set.

I beg to differ - they were being offered for 40 (tx) & 35 (rx), as you say with no VAT. Sure, IR is a bonus, but this is serious money if peeps are looking at wiring up multi-room systems at home.

The cost of making up a few cables if the distances are short (I've gone up to 30m with great results) is considerably less. I urge anyone looking at a home system to experiment before forking out this kind of cash.

My set of mark1 units were round 90.

Keith has added the ir/scart control hardware internally which was a
    50 upgrade on my units.

I make that 140ish which is almost exactly what he is charging for the
professionally made units with CE approval and all the additional features +vat

If you don't need them, then don't buy them. However I note from your earlier post that you have interference on your plasma, which is of course the reason for units like KAT5.

    Hi Mutley,

The prices you quote were for the old AVS-TX @ 40 and the old AVS-RX @ 35 but on top of that you had to buy the power supplies at 6 each giving a total of 87 + P&P

The Mk1 units WITH IR were the TXIR @ 60 and RXIR @ 55, again you had to add power supplies giving a total of 127 + P&P

The Mk2 units are now professionally assembled, have additional features over the Mk1 IR units, and have improved IR Receivers and Emitters.

The prices now INCLUDE the power supplies and if bought as a set will cost 170.

    Regards

    Keith
