    newbie again !!

    Hey guys,

I'm not from an electrical/hardware background. Am a software engineer.

Almost all the tutorials I read on home automation required me to buy some kind of special hardware to control a light bulb (just switching on n off). Cant I just use programming & simple wiring to do this ?

Actually, I am from India & really dont know if the devices needed are available here or not.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

ps: Should I give up hope on home automation coz i'm not from an electrical background ? Frankly asking.

    Welcome Febian

You are always going to need some sort of hardware to do this. You could roll your own with a serially controller relay (for example) but X10 is probably the cheapest, most simple way to start. You can also develop your own software to work with X10, as there are free (for non-commercial use) OCX available.

    Thanks
