    Evohome specialist near Wendover

I’m having problems with my Evohome controlled CH.

Basically I have a hybrid system that was installed by my builders plumber when we had the house extended and a new boiler installed.

I really just wanted a smarter way to control my room stats but now realise that the Evohome is more complicated than that. My wife works from home so we want the heating on all day, but only the downstairs heated during the day.

I have the Evohome controlling the CH with programmable radiator valves, a separate conventional Honeywell programmer controlling the HW, and a John Guest UFH system for 2 rooms all off the same Worcester Bosch boiler.

The HW and UFH are working OK but the rads are not heating up despite the Evohome controller showing measured temp as lower than demanded temp.

This seems to have got progressively worse in the 4 years since the system was installed. It may be something a simple as the CH valve, or may be the Evohome system itself. I’ve got a local heating engineer coming around to check the system, but he won’t touch the Evohome.

So I’m considering disconnecting the Evohome from the CH completely and just running the boiler from the conventional programmer, and try using it just as a valve programmer. The alternative would be to buy a newer Evohome that now supports more zones and move the complete system over to the Evohome. However, given my experience to date I’m loath to do this without specialist help.

I’m getting pretty frustrated by the whole thing.

I may have a similar setup and live not far from you in Amersham. I did the Honeywell Evohome course and installed in 2015 over the top of an existing plumbers original traditional installation.
So I have old timers set to "On 24hrs" and the EH controlling UFH and Rads via the controller for fine temp and timing control. I have had some minor issues but would be happy to come over and compare notes or show you ours?

I assume you've tried the basics, like bleeding the radiators, etc.?

Have you tried taking the Evohome TRV off and manually opening the valve (turn the black wheel fully anticlockwise) when the boiler is running? If this doesn't get heat into the radiator, then it sounds like you've got a plumbing issue.

Do the radiator valves whirr and adjust themselves?

Are there any comms errors on the Evohome controller?

Assuming you have HR92 TRVs, then when the rad is off and it should be on, try setting parameter 10 to 1. That will momentarily display the valve position. It should be open - possibly quite far open when the room is much colder than it should be.

If it's been slowly dying over four years the first thing I'd check is the batteries in the HR92s.

You can't always rely on the display - sometimes it 'freezes' and makes it look like things are OK. Pop the lid off, undo the battery clip, wait a couple of seconds, then close it again. If the display remains blank then it's battery change time.

Ha! I thought of that as I was writing. But by the time I got to the end and thought "what was that other thing I thought of?", it had gone...

It's sorted. Turned out to be the 2 way valve. It had worn teeth and wasn't fully opening so i wasn't getting full flow and the boiler would only fire from UFH and HW.

I also still had the temperature on the boiler on a 'summer' setting, so I've turned that up.

The heating is now much more responsive and all the rads get hot properly. Oil consumption has shot up of course, but that's because we've actually got a warm hose again.
