Bt phone extension wiring ! help

    Hi,

I have a Bt phone extension cable running up into my 2nd bedroom,
but there is no connection at the end, so I cut back the wires and
had a look what I had.

I have the following wires: Yellow, Red, Black & Green.

I have looked about on the inet, but not really found any
diagrams etc.. that will help me wire a socket to the wire for these
    colours of wire.

So I just started guessing which ones went were.

I managed to get the phone to work with the following configuration:

    CONNECTION WIRE COLOUR
    2 Yellow
    3 Red
    5 Black
    not used Green

with the above I can get the phone to work, but I am still unsure
that this is the correct configuration.

If someone can confirm to me is this is correct or what the
correct configuration is, That would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Mark

      Hi Mark,

Those are the colours that the Americans use in line cords. Sounds like a cheap extension kit bought from somewhere. A "proper" BT extension kit would include cable with the correct colour codes. Otto-Mate has already pointed you to my website which has the correct info.

IF you have it working OK then you will have correctly guessed the colours but if the cable is a flat line cord type then any significant length can seriously affect the performance of modems and ADSL.

I would recommend running a new cable either proper phone cable or preferably CAT5.

        Hi,

Thanks for your quick responces =)

I may just get a new extension cable and put that in
just to be on the safe side =)

My box i connected seems to be working ok,
ie. I can recieve calls on it and make calls ok, but as
I am going to be using it for my ADSL broadband connection
I really want to make sure that it is working 100% so I
get the maximum out of the connection.

Does anyone know the correct configuration fore these American
coloured wires? or do you think to be on the safeside i should just go
        with a new extension cable.

The probelm is that the extension cable will have to run from my garage where it currently connects then somehow try and feed it up through the ceiling into the second bedroom, which I am not sure I will be very sucessfull in doing.

So I would prefer to try and get the wires correct in the attached box that
I have put on, as this would be alot less work to do. =)

        Regards,

        Mark

          Hi Mark,

Given that it is the wrong type of cable and wrong colours, by definition there cant be a correct configuration.

Its a bit like saying " I am trying to wire up a 13A plug but the cable has White, Orange and Purple wires. Which goes where?"

The American system only uses two wires and they tend to use Red/Green as the first pair and Black/Yellow if they need a second line.

If you are using non standard colours then the only "correct configuration" would be as follows

          Socket A -----Cable ------- Socket B

          2--------- a colour -------------2
          3----a second colour-----------3
          4----a third colour-------------4
          5----the remaining colour-----5

I have also come across DIY phone sockets that have been wired using 4 core alarm cable which is Red,Black,Yellow,Blue but again there is no defined colour code for wiring a phone as it is not the correct cable for the job.

At the end of the day, the primary purpose of the colour is to correctly identify the same wire at the distant end but it is very important to remember that if the cable is supposed to be twisted pair, that you use twisted pair to minimise crosstalk and interference and that you ensure the signal that make up a pair actually use the same physical pair.

          EG
          2/5 is a pair and should be BLUE/White - WHITE/Blue
          3/4 is a pair and should be ORANGE/White - WHITE/Orange

          Regards

            Hi Again,

            Thanks for your help.

I have managed to find to find a diagram of the wiring configuration i think i need at the below url:

If you visit the above url its shown near the bottom of the page and
its the 2nd plug diagram from the left.

            Thanks again.
