I attended the UKHA show this year. I brought two friends along that are preparing to build a new house and are very interested in adding home automation to the house. To be quite frank, we were a bit dissapointed with the show. At a cost of 25 pounds per person, we expected a lot more than what was there. We were able to see more on home automation attending one of the home improvement shows at the NEC at a much lower price.
I am in computers and home automation is an interesting subject for me, but my friends are not as they put it "geeks". I have to admit, the show was more geered to showing off one product to another vendor and how it could work with theirs system. In fact in a few of the discussions I was telling the vendors that the installation suggestions that they were suggesting were not the best if you wanted to install a system that you could upgrade or change configuration in the future. And there was very little products or information on the ability to retrofit automation into an existing house int he UK.
Next time I guess we will just stick with the general home improvement shows and leave the specialized shows to the vendors.

I am sorry to hear you and your friends were disappointed with your visit to UKA2004 at Hatfield.

The event is a not-for-profit show. We were meeting in a room above a pub two years ago, the event is still based on that annual get-together of the UK Home Automation Community.

To try and secure the show financially we offered a “pre-registration” price that equated to just *£12.50 per day*. This low price was to reward those that helped us by booking early. The cost then got more expensive the nearer to the show you booked – culminating in the top rate of £25 per day (which you paid) if you booked in May or paid at the door. Whilst we realize that £25 is a significant amount of money, in the context of a new build or substantial refurbishment it’s trivial. I have been invited to HA seminars where the daily rate was over £1,000. I think the presentations alone at UKHA2004 were worth the entry fee.

Whilst there are undoubtedly automated lighting companies now showing at mainstream events like the one you refer to in the NEC, I seriously doubt they show “more on home automation”. Did you talk to the Idratek people for example? I’ve simply never seen anything like that at a self-build or home improvement show.

With regards to your retro fit point – did you see the Clipsal presentation? They announced “4000 new parts” arriving this year. Most significantly the launch this summer of their retro-fit “C-Bus Wireless” products. Light switches that are simple swap out for standard UK units. No neutral or other re-wiring required. There was plenty of X10 automation on display too which is retrofit. Also Intamac’s monitored alarm system is wireless and can be retrofitted in around an hour with a screw driver.

We’ve had lots of positive feedback about the event from exhibitors and visitors alike. As a quick example I talked to a gentleman from Donegal who had flown over for the event. He was there with his notebook and was feverishly recording the ideas and contacts he’d made at the show for his new build. I had an email from him when he got home saying how useful he’d found it.

I’m sorry we didn’t live up to your expectations. Perhaps you should indeed stick to the less specialist events.
