What does STATUS RESPONSE actually mean ?

    Hi all,

I'll soon be investing in a Comfort Alarm system which is capable of switching and monitoring X10 signals.

So, I now need to look at getting the right X10 modules.

I'd prefer ones which give feedback, so that the Alarm system truly knows if the appliance or lamp is on or not.

My problem is, when plug-in,micro or wall switch are described as having 'STATUS RESPONSE' , what does this actually mean ? I've read this in to mean :

    - The module transmit the same response as received to switch it on/off/bright/dim
    or
    - That an external controller can poll it to verify it's current state

The term STATUS RESPONSE doesn't tell me which of the above cases apply. Although, the first one arguably can cover off the second, it is still a questionable response because it only reflects the state change at the time the module is switched - it can't be checked say an hour later.

Could someone confirm which case applies to X10 UK equipment ?

Two way modules transmit their status.
A module with status response will respond to a status request command from a controller. Usefull if you want to find out if a module is actually on or off.
IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU'VE GOT AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

That sounds like the second case applies.

      Thanks.

        Yes, toscal is correct.

An X-10 module described as having status response means that the module will respond to the "Status Request" command (0x1F) with either "Status = On" (0x1B) or "Status = Off" (0x1D) command depending on it's electrical state determined by its microcontroller.

Please note that only the on/off state is available and not dimming level and that the state is what the microcontroller within the X-10 module thinks it is, not necessarily the actual electrical state of the appliance being controlled.
