    Default Cold Radiators downstairs

I have a problem with three downstairs radiators. They are the last three radiators in the chain and never seem to get vetry hot.

I have a mid-position control valve sat on top of the water pump upstairs in one of the rooms and this seems to automatically switch between water only or heating only or both water and heating...This seems fine.

When i turn the water heating off so that only the central heating is on and then turn three upstairs radiators off, the last three radiators downstairs will heat up. This is the only way to get these radiators to work.

Is my water pump knackered ???

Its possible. How old is your pump. Have you tried bleeding the radiators, I don't think its this as they get hot when you turn some off.

It looks to me like you haven't got the radiators balanced properly. As toscal suggested look here http://www.diyfaq.org.uk/plumbing/rad-balance.html. Your problem is that radiators further down in chain get too much flow through them thus not leaving enough for the rest. So if you close them the heat gets further down the chain. You need to to follow the procedure in the link above to balance them.

    One correction:
radiators further down in chain don't get enough flow
