How to make my own coax TV extension ?

I feel pretty stupid asking this but, how do you properly attach the ariel connectors to the coax cable?

I've bought some good cable with gold plated connectors but my picture quality is rubbish and I'm pretty sure it's my attempt at attaching the connectors that is the problem because my old ariel lead is much better.

Photos of how to do this would be nice

I've used Belling-Lee plugs where the centre conductor is held in place with a screw rather than solder, but the general principle is the same.
